Is it inevitable that we will take things for granted?

Man is always propelling himself toward the next thing, his thirst may be quelled but can never be quenched. Through millennia of time some have glorified this quality of the human spirit as a beautiful art while others have villainized it as a hellish evil constraining man’s search for flourishing. I couldn’t tell you the answer but I can tell you it’s true that you will never find as much happiness as you anticipate from conquering your goals. Maybe the most beautiful part isnt the peak but rather the climb, as cliche as it sounds.

Deep perspective: I recently had one of my largest burdens lifted. It was a burden so great that I thought I couldn’t bear it. When I experienced a miracle, I felt an intense euphoria and vitality I have never felt before. But only for about a day. Despite the significance of what happened to me, it only took a day for me to adjust, and find a new wrong to orient myself toward righting. I think the Buddhists are absolutely correct on their views toward desire and suffering. But is suffering, and by extension desire, truly to be avoided? Is life denial really the answer?

Bigger question: If there is no true elation / relief after catching the “next thing”, can we really quantify what makes a good life, and what makes a poor life?
