I've done it a few times to pressure a couple roommates to opt out of living at the company apartment, just so I could just have it to myself. Didn't work as well as I expected. It's when I started singing to myself that they finally moved out.

It can be normal to talk to yourself—many people do it to think through problems, rehearse conversations, or process emotions. But the way you describe it—hours of back-and-forth, arguing, or talking as if to another person—is something worth paying closer attention to, not in a judgmental way, but so you can understand what’s going on.

Here are some possibilities, ranging from common to things that might need more support:

✅ Common and not necessarily concerning

  • Thinking out loud to organize your thoughts
  • Self-soothing or processing stress
  • Rehearsing conversations
  • Talking to yourself when lonely as a way to feel less isolated

These can involve some back-and-forth, and many people do them.

⚠️ When it can signal something deeper

It might be helpful to reflect on a few questions:

  • Do the “other sides” of the conversation feel like you, or like another person entirely?
  • Do you ever feel pressured, commanded, or criticized by an internal voice you don’t control?
  • Does the arguing feel distressing or disruptive to your life?
  • Does it happen mostly during stress, lack of sleep, or after difficult experiences?

Long, intense arguments with yourself, or voices that feel separate from you, can show up with:

  • high stress or trauma
  • anxiety or depression
  • ADHD or autism (internal dialogue can be very strong)
  • dissociation
  • or sometimes early signs of conditions that benefit from professional support

It doesn’t automatically mean something is “wrong,” but your experience matters.

💬 If you want, you can tell me more:

  • What are these conversations usually about?
  • Do they feel voluntary or automatic?
  • Do they help you, or leave you distressed?

I can help you sort out what might be going on and how to handle it.

might be fucked
in my head it usually takes place on the train (not sure how to explain it but I'm always visualising myself and the other person on the train)
other person feels like another person but obviously its still me speaking and sometimes there might be more than 2 ppl( again not sure how to explain but its always in a train or somewhere public ig)
happens randomly and the topic usually starts off as maybe like a hot take I see somewhere or anything I have seen recently and then it just spirals out of control quickly and I find myself there for hours just basically roleplaying on random things

You don’t have schitzo everyone does this, some in their head some out loud.
Imagine when your reading a book some people read it out loud or some read it just in their head, depending what helps them process what theyre reading.
Personally I just have a back and forth with my self a lot in my head, mostly about my self, and in general meaning of things, but sometimes dumb shit.
For you that might be imagining your in a train talking with someone, it just depends on what works for you.
