Yes, sometimes when all else fails, you have to have them fear you a little. The kids fearing the father is absolutely essential for peace and order in the house. It should be nothing more that a slap or a couple of belt strikes against safe targets. Sadistic beatings will ruin a kid and make him worse in the long run.

Not really, and this is for kids before puberty, after puberty beating will not be productive. My father has hit me maybe 3-4 times in my life, and I deserved it by being very mean to my mother when I was sure he is not around and just being a little brat. I did not hate him for that but I knew he is ready to dish out a beating if I am a piece of shit to mom.

My dad never drank and I was not a good kid lol, my mom is a very soft woman and if he allowed me I would have gotten away with anything with her. It was needed. But the beatings were not even real beatings did not even leave a mark, more of a slap on the head or belt across legs. More intimidation than beating lol.
