Is it possible for your jaw to recess even more over time?

Title, my friend and I both had orthodontic work done and despite wearing retainers every night, our slight overbites slowly became worse. Now they are pretty deep.

Is this caused by mouth breathing? Wtf is going on?

Teeth has a tendency to relapse especially if it's orthodontics without elastics(which is way worse anyway)
