Is it true that braces can recess my maxilla?

Hello, I am making this thread because I plan on getting braces soon, and I have heard that getting braces will make my maxilla go back, which could make my face look flat. If I get braces, is it true that it can recess my maxilla, if so, is there any way to avoid recessing it while getting braces?
