Well considering the child is formed within the mother's womb, it makes complete sense. Even if hypergamy didn't exist, women could still have gatekept their wombs to a certain extent, regardless of rape, pillage, and inherent inferiority.

There's 2 explanations to this imo.
Either people were much more good looking than today's people (natural environment, genes, diets and skull development).
Or hypergamy has seriously got unbelievably worse now.
