I was always more focused on wanting to get big but over the past 2 years i've been considering getting into it and i've seen some people who do it who have a really toned physique but im unsure if its a waste of time and i don't know how to start it properly

I pretty much only do calisthenics with the use of weights such as dumbbells or belts, mostly because I don't like going to the gym, I'd say it isn't a waste of time and you can hypertrophy, as for starting it that depends on your strength and gear.

In terms of strength I'd use the internet to inquire about exercises, do what you are comfortable with and don't doubt your ability to "unlock" exercises down the line.

I'd say some essentials for progressive overload in light of equipment is just of two components, you need a method of loading weight onto yourself, you will need it eventually, whether it be a backpack full of books or a used set of dumbbells, secondly a pull up bar is an essential, doorway, mounting (drilled into wall) and rack options have all worked at one point or another for me but I'd be most weary of purchasing a doorway bar.
