You need to expose yourself to possibilities. And be social. You work in a given field, you know about a lot of details in that field. You built connections with other relevant people. And you keep your eyes open to spot new opportunities. This way you will see opportunities for making money.

If you are not an expert at anything except for mainstream things or in areas where there is zero money and you don't have connections to other important people, then you pretty much can't make money, except if you get incredibly lucky like winning the lottery.
