Yes and no is too black and white.

If you're concerned with just shooting, bombing and war breaking out then probably the answer is no.

But over the long term NATO would make all kinds of threats to undermine Russia.

That would lead to 1 of 2 things:
1. A cucked Ruski govt just rolls over and plays ball. NATO wins and everyone goes home happy.

2. A radical govt, especially 1 with a lot of nationalist support, ramps up the army, puts nukes at the border to counter NATO and restarts the cold war.
Tense times for everyone but no shooting war until something sparks it...

They claim it's a threat because it prevents them from invading those countries for whatever bullshit reason...

I don't think nato is able to make threats against russia atleast military threats. A new cold war have already started but thats not a threat .

So its black and white and the answer is no

Things are not what they appear to be

No it was an excuse ofcourse jfl, normies mock Russia about Finland joining NATO resulting in Russia having a big border with the alliance is a midwit take at best. Russia doesn't care at all for NATO being on their border and how long that border is or close to their major cities (Estonia as example with St. Petersburg).

The actual reason for this war is both economical and at more importantly if not equal at least, nationalist-cultural. Don't think i need to write an essay about this but Ukraine is basically the heart of Russia, in the true sense, Kiev at the nucleus. The first Russian state was based around modern Belarus and Ukraine, while the provinces in modern Russia were sparsely populated villages except for Novgorod.

In the 13th century Russia broke apart in the dozens of small states and at the worst time with the invasion of the Mongol armies under Sabotai, which ended in disaster and subsequentual annexation of the Russian core regions (modern Ukraine) and vassalisation status for the rest of them with exception of Novgorod. Also somewhat later in this time the Russian states of modern day Belarus was absorbed by the Lithuanians.

To cut the story short, it was this isolation which happened between these northern forest states (Moscovy as one of these) and the other ones ruled by non Russians directly, which shaped the modern nation of Ukraine and Belarus.

Againts all logic odds and in poetic beauty Muscovy, a previously weak splinter nation of the Russian state, started slowly growing and growing and it took almost 300 years until Muscovy went from their insignificant status to uniting all of the other splinter nations in their surroundings including the powerful state of Novgorod. Sadly for this reborn Russia, enough time passed that their western and southern people have already started to develop unique identites, Ukraine more so then Belarus for a few reasons. One being the complete destruction of southern Ukraine constantly by Crimean Tatar raids which led to the anarchical wild west of the region develop its own unique culture and lifestyle, and im refering to the Cossacks here. The western parts of modern Ukraine got heavily influenced by Poland and Lithuania.

To cut long story short, an awkard situation resulted from this distance of few centuries where the former Russians (and the core of the ethnicum at that ironically) confusingly self identified as being not Russian but a made-up ethnicities. This deeply disturbs modern Russians because Ukraine was the heart of their whole existence, Kiev the place of their baptism, where all East Slavs got united the first time. So it would be national suicide for the place to go in hands with the percieved enemies of Russia.

Whats interesting here to mention is that this is unique for Russia as well, for other European nations there is no specific state which is their nucleus by a large margin (Serbs larp about Kosovo, the actual nucleus of Serbs is Raska and Herzegovina)
