What I'm seeing is less than a 1% risk of death/serious complication, strabismus and other minor complications are a real possibility.

The reality is that it's not risky in terms of you dying but it's:
1) EXTREMELY hard to get
2) The result is essentially a lottery (Maybe good, maybe bad, no way to tell)
3) You might get minor health complications, again a lottery

Isn't giants way of doing it slightly less invasive "no Brainer" or something, I think that picture is the more traditional way of doing it
