Is pinning at 17 good or a waste of time?

I don't really care about short-term benefits but instead long-term, in a year or so (when I turn 17), would it be alright to start pinning then? I can't pin at this age because of geographical circumstances.

Also kind sirs please tell me what benefits and negatives would come

I plan to get an x-ray sooner or later to check my bone-age.
