Basic manners shouldn't be confused with respect. I think you should treat everyone decently, but showing respect to someone is a whole different matter. Actual respect needs to be earned.

Depends on what you respect the person for. Even unattractive people can be respected if they are based ideology-wise or do something that is brave, etc.
