I've never been to Salerno, I've been to Naples that is the closest city to Salerno. Yes it's a shithole. I mean the city and the sea is good, the problem is that Naples (and close cities) are full of criminals, pickpocket, scammers. A lot of people there have guns, even 13 yo kids.
It's the most dangerous part of Italy, other parts of Italy are safe and there's way less criminality
