Solar is extremely costly up-front but once it is setup it can very well be worth it since you will be mining for free (aside from your maintenance costs), and then you can use the profits from your operation to keep buying the latest ASIC miners.
I'm not a fan of mining though because you have to constantly replace your ASICs with the next latest and greatest one that outperforms the prior (literally every 3-4 months), turn everything off during bear runs, deal with machines potentially malfunctioning, heat management, electrical management, etc.
