Is susceptibility to autuimmunity a genetic or environmental factor?

Most people list mouthbreathing as an environmental factor (i.e shoulden't have happened). But is this really the case?

You have to look at what causes someone to mouthbreathe growing up. For most of the time, it is due to severe allergies. Allergies is actually in an auto-immune issue, so my question is if people are born with auto-immunity or if people gain it through external factors (such as diet or GMO's)

It's not exactly a question for a doctor. It's a question of "Why did people begin mouthbreathing in the 19th century". I am curious on what external factor led to mass allergies and other auto immune issues.
