Is there an actual explanation for why my eye area looks so subhuman when taking a picture with flash?

Specifically using the selfie snapchat camera. I've taken two pictures, one with flash in a dark area. My eye area looked completely subhuman, ESR looked shit (which it already is, but my point is it looked way worse with flash)

I then took a second photo, without flash, using natural lighting, and my eyes looked way better.

Both were with the exact same angle so I could compare the two.

Explanations???

if it's specifically flash it's probably poor definition of the nasal bridge, especially near the root.

flash adds more shadows in your pic so image looks a bit different from natural lighting
