is working under the table in the USA super illegal?

I have a very good minecraft friend of mine somewhere in the USA he got offered to work at a restaurant he made it very clear that he wasnt a US citizen but a tourist the boss said he didn't mind

could the worst that happen is that this very good friend get kicked out / banned or can you go to jail? boss should take the fall no?

or maybe its common practice now with all the illegal immigrants

the only risk is being caught staying in the country illegally. they have no way of proving that you owe money for the income you made unless you deposit it in a bank which would be a problem after years and years, and even then this hardly seems to be a problem for undocumented laborers considering it's never brought up
