I had jaw surgery to fix an underbite a few years ago
Recently I decided to begin new orthodontic treatment because it was advised to me for long term gum health and the ortho also said he would address a few parts of my bite (which I found un-ideal) so I thought I was making the right choice by doing to brief course of orthodontics because he said it would have no impact on jaw position
Wouldn't you know it, on the very first aligner my jaw started to move position but I wasn't paying much attention to it so I didn't realize until I was on the second aligner.
I was puzzled by how a couple of aligners (where there would be no more than 0.4mm cumulative movement on my teeth) could have such a drastic impact on my jaw position.
I convinced myself that it was due to my jaw rotating, because my jaw and chin looked more downward grown and my chin looked bigger/blockier (bad in my case)
I got the attachments off asap and got back to my old aligner and retainer to try undo the damage and restore my post surgery jaw position
Once it began to restore, I realized that it wasn't rotation that caused such a narrow jaw, downward grown appearance to arise, but it was actually the mandible protruding forward by an amount that even I couldn't notice.
Even though one may think a protruding jaw creates a less downward grown appearance than a setback jaw, the key component in this regard is the gonian position.
When your jaw is setback, the angle from your gonian to chin may look more steep, but it doesn't get highlighted because of how the soft tissue sits on the mandible when your jaw is in a natural position.
When your jaw is protruding, the angle from gonian to chin WONT look as steep, but because your mandible is protruding against the skin, it HIGHLIGHTs the existing downward growth that's present in your mandible.
Mandible in natural setback position = downward growth not highlighted
Mandible in protruding position = skin stretched against the mandible, downward growth highlighted
I was convinced my gonian height had changed and it moved up higher while chin got lower, but the only difference was how the soft tissue interacts with the jaw when it's setback v protruding and the impact that has visually on the rest of the face
When my mandible came forward, it changed how the shadow was cast on my jaw, and it caused the shadow to overlap onto the bottom of the jawline, hiding part of the jawline under certain lighting which looks less aesthetic than when mandible is setback and the shadow doesn't overlap on the jawline (extremely difficult to explain this, just take my word for it)
Also, having my mandible set back changed how my upper face and face as a whole looked, as well as just looking like your mandible actually fits your face.
While my mandible came forward, my struggles to diagnose the issue had me thinking I needed another genio because of how narrow and downward grown my mandible was looking, but now reflecting on it that wouldn't have fixed the root of the problem and would've left the harmony still off.
Keep in mind I still had a class I occlusion and space between upper and lower incisors when my mandible came forward meaning it must've only been a couple of milimetres of protrusion but it absolutely destroyed my face
Having almost entirely restored my jaw to it's post surgery position at this point, it's almost as good as the aftermath of my actual surgery because this time I am recovering BACK to a superior position and I'm actually aware of what I had to lose, as opposed to original surgery where you go into it just hoping for the best improvement possible.
With this change however, the stakes felt higher and significant jaw shifts happened within days as opposed to post surgery where you can't tell how you'll look for a while because you're a swollen mess.
This ordeal has actually given me greater appreciation for my appearance.
While I still was getting the same degree of attention from foids while working in a club when my jaw was briefly in the downward grown looking position, it put into perspective for me just how fucked underbitecels are aesthetically and how impressive it is to have a high slaycount achieved as an underbitecel
It was mentally obliterating to feel like I went from a normal jaw positoncel to a 2mm protuding jaw cel but looking back on how my jaw used to look pre surgery, it was cartoon tier compared to my recent downward grown position.
I could make the case for it being binary in terms of self acceptance between jaw being in correct position v protruding by 2mm or 6mm but it really made me wonder just how much mental damage is subconsciously absorbed from seeing your 6mm+ protruding jaw in the mirror for a decade+
The few weeks I had to deal with it recently almost destroyed me mentally, the pain of knowing my face wasn't right every time I looked in the mirror for 10+ years must've done untold damage also
NO ONE ON EARTH HAS HAD A BIGGER MENTAL OBSTACLE TO OVERCOME THAN A MAN WHO HAS LIVED 10+ YEARS WITH AN UNDERBITE
The fact that there are such men who managed to achieve significant things in that timeframe is utterly remarkable
