Back in the 1970s and 1980s advertising on radio stations was about 12 minutes of the hour, now it is 19 minutes of the hour. On TV it has increased less, from 14 minutes of the hour to maybe 18 minutes of the hour, but they scroll ads across the screen during the shows now. Then there were a few premium clothing brands like Lacoste that had prominent labels, but for the most part clothes didn't have labels, now it is difficult to buy a decent shirt or hat without some label. In 2022 there are entire stores dedicated to selling clothing with sports team names on them. Forty years ago there were slightly more billboard ads, but now there are all kinds of ads that didn't exist then, sides of buses with ads, ads on boxes, ads screaming at you when you enter a store, and of course there are all the ads on the interweb.
I consciously call it weird because there are far more options entertainment wise than there were back then. One would reasonably predict that additional competition for your attention in TV, radio, and Interweb markets would result in less aggressive marketing, but the opposite has occurred. And increasingly the people with the most disposable income are opting to pay for entertainment options that are ad free, so ads in 2022 are mostly only influencing poor people.
