"I prefer men with hair";
"I prefer men who are white";
"I prefer men who are tall";
"I prefer men who are well-endowed";
"I prefer men who are able to spoil me";
"It's just a preference."

A renown phrase, an agonizing phrase, an "innocent" phrase, a phrase some people here know well, all too painfully well. Let us unveil the dissimulation of those who profess their innocence by stating, "it's just a preference" -- to prefer something is, "the fact that you like something or someone more than another thing or person", or "an advantage that is given to a person or a group of people" (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/preference), and discrimination: "treating a person or particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin color, sex, sexuality, etc." (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/discrimination).

Before moving on, let me say that, without a doubt, the extent to which one is discriminated because of a certain feature can vary; a short person may be more discriminated against than a bald person. Likewise, the extent to which one is discriminated because of a combination of features can vary; a bald, short person may be discriminated against more than an average height but not well-endowed Asian. I am sure there is some cultural dependence as well. Hereafter, I focus on racial discrimination, as it is probably the least socially accepted form of discrimination.

When we hear someone say they prefer dating white guys over Asians, for example, their farcical justification to legitimize themselves is, "It is just a preference." What is implicit in this statement is that there is something better about being white: it is preferred. When you prefer something, you bequeath an advantage unto the selected, you discriminate in favor of the selected. This is, you can very well argue, racism. A common retort to this may be, "Well, I have dated an Asian guy before. I just generally prefer white men." To reduce to the absurd: well, Hitler had a Jewish chauffeur named Emil Maurice. Certainly this means Hitler had nothing against Jewish people. In short, there are exceptions -- this does not mean someone is not a racist, etc.

In a different vein, if it is socially acceptable to say, "I prefer dating white guys -- it is just a preference", one should be entitled to say, "I prefer living with white people only". The latter statement would be met with visceral repugnance -- the point, however, still stands: they are both forms of discrimination. For a more similar case: if you own a restaurant, you could argue that you prefer to serve only white people (I do not think the law would like this).

If .me island were created with a maximum capacity of 1500, and we said, "We prefer white people" and this preference is strong, then if there were 5,000 white applicants, 10,000 black applicants, 10,000 Indian applicants, 10,000 Asian applicants, I imagine there would be 1500 white people on .me island. Now, we could quite possibly extrapolate this case to the workplace or dating: if there are more applicants than there are positions and white people are strongly preferred, I wonder what would happen.

The masquerading of discrimination in the ostensibly irreproachable phrase, "It's just a preference" is, in short, absurd.... That these prigs bear the temerity to utter such a phrase so blithely as if it were to exonerate them of their being a discriminator... comical.

"I prefer people who are heterosexual;
"I prefer people without disabilities";
"I prefer people who are men";
"I prefer serving people who are white";
"I prefer people who are religious;
"It's just a preference."

It is what it is. Is there a point in trying to disambiguate it? When everyone clearly understands what it means, it's just so called "being nice", got to read between the lines.
And the preference is chad and chad only. Rest is a cope.

Well, take my example of the restaurant. The sanctimonious espousers of the "it's just a preference" will swiftly say their dating preferences are just preferences; the preference of just serving white people in a restaurant they will likely deem racist. Do you think the restaurant, legal, social, or both, would not face consequences for this? My point is, why is it that these people get to pick and choose what "preference" is acceptable? Why should I acquiesce to these Janus-faced people? A poignant statement... "It is what it is".

I'm pretty sure restaurant owners can just deny any people from entering. It's their establishment. As a matter of fact, night clubs do that for sure, there are people called "bouncers" for that purpose. Now whether it's worth it or not reputation/profits wise, is another question, but if the restaurant would want to do it, it could do it. Why not?

Presuming you are from the U.S., it is illegal to discriminate based on race in such an instance.

You do outline specificalities in your op, it'd happen if anyone cared/there'd be a market for it. There could be hundreds of reasons made up on the spot, as to why a certain person was not let in inside. If it happens in europe, it surely happens in us.

what about "I prefer women who are good looking"?

what do you think of this

its typical modern thinking of course. some arbitrary time constraint determines the morality of a male pursuing a young female

Interesting you made that thread on .co; I entirely agree, that part of the fat acceptance is a means to socially engineer men/women to be more open to dating fatter women. Likewise, the racism faced by certain races in the realm of dating is "ok" because it primarily affects men, though maybe for black women they have a case as well.

I say part because I am sure the movement was not only about dating.
what about "I prefer women who are good looking"?
Yes. I think this again leads to body positivity movements where there is social engineering to be more accepting of women who are not as good looking. The problem, as we know, is that when these same people claim "dating preferences" and try to rationalize it as if it's not an entirely similar cause to the one they were fighting against.
