It's over for math, wasted my life getting a math masters for basically nothing

AI can now do open math problems almost effortlessly. OpenAI admitted they are currently sitting on over 100 solutions to unsolved open problems, and haven't released them because mathematicians threw a hissy fit over Navier-Stokes being solved and released.

I thought I was gonna get a PhD and become a mathematician being the autist I am, but AI ruined that path. Now I have to escape into industry and set up an internship in the next few months with my pure math-ass resume.

Chill brah maybe not too late to go into a field that the companies wouldnt want to use ai in for legal complications

literally the same thing for me but for cs

it's crazy how the fields that required the most critical thinking are the ones fading faster

if you werent autistic u could become a businessman like me

Truly over. Even worse is that the usual pivot for people in math is CS, which is in it's worst state ever for entry-level jobs. I don't think I'll have the time to grind leetcode problems enough to get me interview level since I'm also doing research, TAing, attending classes, and trying to get an internship.

math is pure bullshit if ur future job doesnt need it like why do u need calculus to work in a restaurant:ROFLMAO:

When? I'm in my last year, so I only have one internship cycle left. Since internship applications are due in the fall first term, this only gives me a month or two max to prepare. After that, if I can't find an internship or a job I'll have to move back in with my mom and her boyfriend (JFL).

there have already been layoffs at the company I work for, including mid-level devs, which is crazy to think about. Imagine being a guy just starting college now, hoping to land an internship in 3-4 years JFL

The path to quant is extremely competitive, since there are so few quant jobs. Typical paths are a PhD from a top university in probability or specialized masters programs that cost more than an MBA.

A recruiter hit me up about a desk quant analyst position which can turn into a quant position, but the interviews seem to be like CS interviews on steroids, with both math-stats greenbook problem-solving and mental math technical interviews, and leetcode medium-hard technical interviews. I don't even know what finance questions would appear.

get into quant if u can somehow, but im surprised u do not look like a math major at all. How hard is math at that level

Wth does that mean :lul:
How hard is math at that level
Basically as hard as it gets once you hit doing-novel-research level, since you're at the frontier of a field (though some fields are harder than others, and most mathematicians have weaknesses in certain areas making those the hardest for them, etc.).

You study abstract structures of relations, not necessarily numbers or shapes, and have to rigorously prove facts about them, which are given in words and not calculations (you can't calculate a proof, it's a logical argument). It looks like schizo nonsense to anyone on the street, since you are no longer even using numbers really other than 0, 1, 2, and infinity. Everything is autistically precisely stated and defined to such a point that you have to be able to translate it to predicate logic.

You routinely work in multiple, if not infinite, dimensional spaces. You also work in spaces where each point is it's own space, or with functions taking sets of functions to other sets of functions. You generalize concepts like distance and volume until they can even work on schizo spaces like those. You can easily get six or seven quantifier deep statements (e.g. for all a there exists b,c such that for all d there is an j such that for all k and l, etc.). You have to understand things completely or you'll be unable to prove the theorems on the exams.

Idk when I think of a cutting edge mathmatician I think of a jeeto or a balding old nigga not a twink like u gangasauresrex, no disrespect btw i acc mean that. Solving abstract structures of relations, can u give like give me a recent interesting example problem you were solving, that seems so interesting tbh. Too bad there isnt much money in solving such issues in the west unfortunately. That seems easy I used to get seven quantifier statements deep in scratch code :feelsgah:. Yeah I mean that def does not sound like a field u can bullshit in at all, exams have got to be super stressful, and the fact that u went through all that painstaking work for ai to rape u is so fooking broo'al. A negro like me would take my mathematical skills and use them to create an algorithm for the best fj vids on the internet personally :feelsgah::aheago:

I'm definitely not a cutting-edge mathematician that's def not what I'm saying JFL.

I'm saying in order to do research, you need to be on the frontier of a field (i.e. in tap with the new mathematics that has been done in that field, in order to build on it). That's as hard/deep as that field gets since you are literally on the edge of it so you can branch it out more. Talented graduate students do novel research and release papers that get published.

just use the ai to solve problems u still need a math degree/ knowledge and autism/ out of the box thinking for that

Using AI to solve problems is no longer out of the box. These models are improving rapidly fast and soon you will be able to oneshot most open problems. AI solved Navier-Stokes which is one of the most challenging open problems in the field.

I mean ur in ur last year and studying to do novel research so I misinferenced that u did some practice problems before mbb. That makes sense, I guess it wont be much longer till ur there my negro. Are u excited or into this or are u just there for the money? Why did u get into mathematics

Another problem is the definitions for concepts are nested, it's like a pyramid of concepts where one concept is defined in terms of another etc., and the problems are in terms of those concepts, so to explain a problem would also mean I need to explain the definitions and then the definitions behind the concepts in those definitions etc.

fares, i prolly couldnt grasp it at all then. Its prolly super complicated.

With A LOT of prework being done, yes

And someone will still need to prompt this right but yes = in the end AI will be better and cheaper than ANYTHING humans can do

there is no escape, we are getting fully replaced 100% and i dont even care

either they will change the social system completely (free money distribution, bc no need for work, but you still need to eat) or it will collapse
Using AI to solve problems is no longer out of the box.
for the work that is being done to be able to prompt it, it still plays an important role

I've already released two papers, one has been published the other is still being reviewed (this can take awhile). I taught myself a lot of math as a kid because I found some textbook my dad had laying around and wanted to be able to not pay attention and jsut do whatever I want in math classes in school.

For uni, math is super general so I figured if I learned it I could learn other things way easier. Also I liked the rigor and was interested in philosophy. It was also STEM so it seemed like I could make some money off of it too. I ended up being pretty good and wanted to be a mathematician.

Only cuz you don't have the necessary background. It will just sound schizo. I also don't wanna accidentally dox myself by giving a question from class or a problem from my research or something, since this can all be found public online.

Well I meant that math after algebra for some is just unnecessary since u don’t need to be able to do advanced math like Einstein to work and earn a lot of money

damn acc mirin hard, when I was a kid and bored I just became a prodigy on the skin flute. That was super responsible tho mirin.

Thats pretty fire dude, mirin hard. Agreed math does def help u with learning other shit easier, though im in premed the rigorous, objective/solutions focused, yet abstract way of thinking it develops ur brain into being has helped me out of situations i couldve never studied for.
