If he actually has to use his gun, legally he won't be able to claim self defense. Because he armed himself and then went around to purposely provoke people into confrontation. The courts call it Manufactured Provocation. You can't arm yourself and then go in public and try to provoke someone into attacking you and then claim self defense.
