Pretty sure this was one of those scam calls where people call pretending they have kidnapped a family member to get money from you. They put your crying "relative" on the phone and the voice sounds muffled and like the call is breaking up so that you can't tell it's not a relative. My dumb father got one and was about to send them money until I told him it was a scammer calling from prison or something.
