It's about manners, etiquette - things that have pretty much disappeared today, back in the old days it was considered insulting to a man if his wife/gf spoke to another unknown guy.
If a couple went together at a restaurant/bar/hotel/store, the waiters/cashiers/receptionists/etc. would talk to the man, and the man with his woman.
For example if you went to a restaurant - the waiter would greet you, ask what you want to order, you would check with your woman, and then talk to the waiter and say what you want. A waiter addressing directly to the woman was considered insulting, like he was hitting on her in front of you, he could be fired for this, the same with a woman talking directly to the waiter - it was considered unmannered and like she didn't care at all if her man would be offended.
