The bass was still vibrating through the floorboards of the Kingston apartment when Devon realized something was off. Shanice hadn’t looked at her phone in three days without smiling, and it wasn’t the lighthearted chuckle she usually reserved for memes about traffic on Red Hills Road. This was different. A quiet, soft-focused trance.
"Shanice," Devon called out from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a dishtowel after seasoning the chicken for dinner. "Who you texting so much? You hardly touch the ackee."
"Nobody, Dev," she said, her thumb flying across the glass screen. "Just... talking."
"Talking to who?"
"Gamer."
Devon paused, leaning against the doorframe. "Gamer who? What he last name?"
"Just Gamer," she said, not looking up. "He said he can take me to see the world."
" The world?" Devon let out a short, dry laugh. "Shanice, man don't even have a surname, and you talking about world tour? Where he live?"
"Everywhere," she murmured.
Two weeks later, the apartment felt half-empty. Devon came home from work to find the closet cleared out, save for a few of his own shirts on wire hangers. On the kitchen counter, right beside the rice cooker, sat a small piece of paper with Shanice’s handwriting on it.
Devon, I’m leaving. I have to go with Gamer.
Devon threw the paper down and grabbed his keys, marching straight down to the local yard where his friend Junior was bent over the engine of an old Toyota Corolla.
"Junior, you know a guy named Gamer?" Devon demanded, his voice tight.
Junior wiped grease off his knuckles with a rag and blinked. "Gamer? What kind of name that?"
"Shanice gone," Devon said, pacing back and forth on the gravel. "She pack up her bag and left with Gamer. She say he taking her away."
"Who is Gamer?" Junior asked, looking confused. "He a doctor? He drive taxi? He sell plot of land in St. Ann?"
"I don't know!" Devon snapped, throwing his hands in the air. "She just say Gamer! Every time I ask, she just say Gamer!"
"Well, where Gamer take her?"
Devon pulled out his phone, scrolling to Shanice's social media page. The latest photo showed Shanice sitting on a plush leather seat, a pair of sleek, glowing headsets resting around her neck, smiling wider than Devon had seen in years. The location tagged wasn't Kingston, Montego Bay, or even Miami.
It just read: With Gamer.
Devon stared at the screen for a long time, the hum of the city moving around him, completely unable to figure out how he had lost the love of his life to Gamer.
