used a Ouija board since it’s a crude interface, and sometimes crude interfaces can bypass security measures.
I never inquired if he is alive. That assumes too much fixed structure. I inquired about what still answers to that name.
“The board did not budge at first. It then started responding in pieces that did not correlate with the order of the questions. Could cause lag. Like packets of information arriving via different routes.”
Some answers were personal for him. Some were personal for the container that held the reference. One answer disregarded him altogether and talked about the system that maintained the reference.

“YOU ARE READING A CACHE”
That seemed about right. Not communication. Retrieval.
The last production it made before ceasing operations:
“EVENTS DON'T END
THEY DECAY”
