Pretty much, it lowers your hunger hormones as well as slowing digestion(so food stays in your stomach longer, thus keeping you full for longer). It unconsciously tricks you into eating less, putting you into a calorie deficit and thus making you lose weight.

From the studies there don't seem to be significant long-term side effects. Some people get things like nausea and headaches.
