Russia isn’t just Slavic, it’s a federation rather than an ethnostate, millions of people in Russia like Tatars and Chechens aren’t Slavs and speak Russian only as a second language.

But this war isn’t about that, wars are about resources and geopolitics, not ethnicity or religion.

Reading about Crimea, how it’s only ever been ~3% Ukrainian and was a gift to them from the Soviet Union, should make this obvious. That modern nation states do not represent ethnicities. Maybe 3 or 4 countries on the entire planet have borders that are consistent with ethnicity and language.
