"Job Loyalty" is a Myth

I was 15 getting paid $8/hr to work at my local pizza shop.

My boss would yell at us for making the smallest mistakes or even asking simple questions. Despite this, I still gave it my all every time I came to work. I would volunteer to clean the dining room when it was slow, scrub the kitchen floor when nobody asked me to, and do a whole lot of other things I shouldn't have in hopes of getting noticed by my boss and earning a raise.

After exactly one year of working there, I received one raise. I went from making $8/hr to making $9/hr.

It took me a while to muster up enough courage to quit that job, but once I did, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my chest. I eventually found another job with a better working environment and a heck of a lot more money to offer, and since then I've been a lot happier.

Looking back on it now, I'm a little angry at myself for trying so hard. But I guess what I'm trying to say here is never let your boss take advantage of you. If you find an opportunity to get paid more, take it. No job is worth your health and happiness. There's always going to be something better out there, so why waste your time and energy on a job that couldn't care less about you? Know your worth, kings.
