Recently I had a phone call with an Afghan friend of mine who became a murtad for years and then came back to Islam and slipped back into murtaddom again but he felt the same way as me. They are sins and they are forgivable. Technically you can even be a murderer and a faggot. It's a sin. It's easy to be Muslim, no sin other than that of polytheism can be a grounds for takfir.

Still you will get some people push the boundaries of what constitutes polytheism. Sunnis do not conflate personal sins with disbelief, as long as you don't think the sin is justified (a.k.a argue it's halal to eat pork, drink alcohol, be gay). There are many "scholars" who would argue this btw - surprisingly they all live and studied in the West.
