I used to measure myself against a wall using a Nintendo ds game to put on top of my head and draw a mark on the wall but it turns out that a ds game is not long enough to reach the top of your head which is a bit further back on your head
, a ds game is only 13.5 cm long but you need to use something longer of at least 20 cm / 8 inch (I used a motherboard box) so you can make sure that the absolute top of your head is being measured, just make sure what you are using is not deformed and doesn't have any slight variations on its surface so you don't lose or gain extra millimeters
, this way turns out I'm actually 188.5 cm barefoot at night rather than the 188.2 cm I was getting, this might seem like a negligible amount but I remember when I was 16 and was measuring myself at over 185 cm for most of the day except at night before going to sleep at which I was only measuring myself at 184.9 and going to sleep angry and depressed when it turns out that if I had measured myself with something longer I would have gotten a 185.2 cm measurement and saved myself some nights of being angry and depressed.
Also, turns out stadiometers give you a few extra mm than what your real height is and that the best way to measure yourself is to draw a mark on the wall the way I explained before and measure from the floor up to that point, just make sure that the tip of the measuring tape that you will place on the floor doesn't have any gaps on the bottom part between the metal tip and the tape which could make a measurement of 180cm appear as 179.9cm. You also need to make sure that the tape is completely straight against the wall and doesn't have any gaps between it and the wall, you can make sure of this by do this by using it the other way around so the metal tip doesn't create a gap between the tape and the wall, you also need to make sure that you measure yourself on a perfectly flat floor and that the wall you are measuring yourself against is perfectly straight.
