ok tbf he was writing this before Calculus was rigorously defined. Before people like Cauchy, Weierstrass, Riemann etc developed analysis Calculus was seen with extreme skepticism. Somewhat understandably, its easy to see why the behavior infinitesimals could seem like a ridiculous concept, and it was indeed seen as such by many.

For example alot of proofs in physics rely on the idea of higher order differentials like df*dg being treated as 0. Which I admittedly was skeptical of until I was shown when this assumption is true and when it fails using analysis. So I find the early skepticism towards calculus understandable.

I mean i have a bachelors in math so i know what you’re saying, but those quotes are from pre-19th century. Marx was 19th century and was writing after cauchy and weierstrass already made calculus rigorous (which is around 1820). So this nigga doesn’t even have that excuse jfl he’s just being a dumbass

Because the differential is not just “zero” , nor is dy/dx a fraction. The derivative is a limiting value, meant to describe the local behavior of a function.
