Killing is never okay. And no, the idea of justice is essentially that killing be carried out by a third-party who is "dispassionate" regarding the true cause of conflict. Otherwise, it will be just blood everywhere, and no sign of safety for anyone.

In general, yes, self-defense may be excused as one of those situations where it's acceptable to do that, but only if it's proven that it was a last resort, a no-other-choice scenario.

But there also huge complications arise - particularly around the 'intent' of both parties involved. If the 'surviving' party deliberately incited the provocation of the attacking party (who is now dead ), that is definite cause for investigation.

I am not sure if the current justice system has laws about that though. Maybe it doesn't because I sometimes do read about cases where people were let go on the grounds that they killed in self-defense, although there would be reasonable doubt regarding why they had to go to such extremes as killing, when other actions may have de-escalated the situation.

You have to have something inside you that is different/strange/(insane?) if you ever kill intentionally (even in self-defense).
