Nam tiến (Vietnamese: [nam tǐən]; Hán tự: 南進; lit. "southward advance" or "march to the south") is a historiographical concept[a][2] that describes the historic southward expansion of the territory of Vietnamese dynasties' dominions from the 11th to the 19th centuries.[3][4] The concept of Nam tiến has differing interpretations, with some equating it to Viet colonialism of the south and to a series of wars and conflicts between several Vietnamese kingdomshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nam_tiến#cite_note-6 and Champa Kingdoms, which resulted in the annexation and Vietnamization of the former Cham as well as indigenous territories.[c]

The Viet domain was gradually expanded from its original heartland in the Red River Delta into southern territories, which were controlled by the Champa kingdoms. In a span of some 700 years, the Viet domain tripled the area of its territory and more or less acquired the elongated shape of modern-day Vietnam.[5] Beginning in the 20th century, traditional Vietnamese historiography coined the term Nam tiến for what they believed to be a gradual, inevitable southern expansion of Vietnamese domains. According to the 20th-century Vietnamese scholars who constructed the Nam tiến as a continuous historical phenomenon, the 11th to the 14th centuries saw battle gains and losses as frontier territory changed hands between the Viet and the Chams during the early Cham–Viet wars. In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the Vietnamese defeated the less centralized state of Champa and seized its capital in the 1471 Cham–Vietnamese War. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Vietnamese settlers penetrated the Mekong Delta. The Nguyen Lords of Huế wrested the southernmost territory from Cambodia by diplomacy and by force, which completed the "March to the South".

The Muslim and Hindu Cham people were the remnants of the Kingdom of Champa, which had been conquered by Vietnam in a series of wars. The last remnant of the Cham Kingdom was conquered in 1832 by the expansionist Vietnamese Emperor Minh Mạng. The Cham under the Muslim preacher Katip Suma declared a Jihad against the Vietnamese but the uprising was eventually crushed. Ethnic Vietnamese colonists settled on Cham land where today they outnumber the native Cham.

The area of the Mekong Delta and Saigon formerly belonged to the Khmer Kingdom of Cambodia until its annexation by the Vietnamese Nguyễn lords who subsequently settled Vietnamese on the land, where they outnumber the native Khmer Krom.

I'm actually Thai (mixed). What I remember of history (or what at least is taught in Thailand) is as follows:

British & French: Hey Thailand!

Thailand: Yo, what's up, Bros?

British: France and us have decided on how to divide up SE Asia. What we want to do is not screw with Thailand, and allow it to keep its sovereignty as a buffer zone between the two countries.

Thailand: Go on.

France: So what we want to do is have us French conquer and enslave the land to your East, so you don't have to worry about the Viet or the Khmer in Cambodia.

Thailand: Well, that doesn't sound too bad. Those dudes had caused us problems in the past.

British: And what we're going to do is conquer and enslave the lands to your South, such as Malaysia and Singapore, as well as the West, including your historic arch enemy Burma/Myanmar.

Thailand: Yeah, Burma burned down our capital in the 1700's. We're really not happy with them. What do we gotta do?

British & French: Nuthin'. We'll just conquer and enslave your neighbors. If you're cool with it, we'll just leave you alone.

Thailand: Sounds good, bro. We're down for that.

Hundreds of years later, Thailand has no wars, was never colonized, and maintained its sovereignty. And Thailand has the second biggest economy in Southeast Asia, only behind Indonesia.

And the icing on the cake is that the United States paid for much of Thailand's infrastructure costs and defense budget because the U.S. used Thai bases and airfields to bomb Vietnam.

Your country wasnt ravaged by war yet youre still a third world shithole after all these years

The Siamese, and later, the Thais, following the Vietnamese expansions and occupation in the 15th century,[citation needed] became extremely frightened and hostile towards Vietnam.[5] The Siamese had waged a number of wars against Vietnam since the 18th century, but they had not won another war after the successful first ransack in 1712. This facilitated Vietnamophobia among the Siamese. Similar to the Cambodians, Thais also referred to the Vietnamese as "Youn", a derogatory term similar in meaning to "barbarian", which is a corruption of "Yona", a Pali and Sanskrit term for "Greek"(Due to the invasion and subsequent establishment of the "foreign" Indo-Greek Kingdom).

Anti-Vietnamese sentiment in Thailand has been the direct result of Vietnamese expansionism in the past, with indication of fears about Vietnamese conquest in the history.[5] Since the war between two started at 18th century, Siam had only won one direct conflict, with the others were all indecisive or Siamese defeats to the Vietnam, manifested the theory of Vietnamese aggression and imperialism on Thai people. Thailand also later participated in the Vietnam War, and took prides for its participation.
