I've been taking l-carnitine and noticed an increase in leanness and muscle density despite no significant change in calories or workout regimen.
I take acetyl l-carnitine as a nootropic but this form of l-carnitine had no affect on body composition. I added l-carnitine l-tartrate to the mix and had a noticetable difference in physique.

My experience also supports this 3 week study where they found l-carnitine l-tartrate upregulated androgen recepeptor content. The study was only done on 10 people so it's not ideal but the supplement is worth a shot.
I usually take it in the morning, as well as before and after my workout before a post workout meal.
