This map shows the presance of Bison in the Americas, the largest land animal in the American continental region (north and south). They were numerous, 2000lbs/850kgs and were easy to hunt, big easy food meant less time hunting and more time for developing cultural and idealistic standards, standards meant sexual selection and sexual selection means better specimens. Taller, robust and better looking.

Low prey biomass Mountain Lion

I use Mountain lions as an example because they are just as much victims of their native environment's prey biomass as humans are and scale roughly to the same size of a man under identical circumstances in a natural environment if relying on meat for survival. Mountain lions are like a ruler, how they look in a natural environment is how humans would look in size.
Subhuman Mountain lions = subhuman humans (medium sized mammalian carnivore)

South American Mountain Lion

The difference between humans is the same. North Amerindians, with all of their access to healthy, big animals were handsome and strong. South Amerindians, with nothing but a 4lb monkey to look forward to were recessed, short, weak and unattractive. This same dynamic is present in asia, with North East Asians brutally mogging South East Asians.
Your environment defines you.

Good nutrition and good habits is what creates greatness, even in animals one can see:
