What Are The Side Effects Of Latisse?

Unwanted Hair Growth

Yes ma’am, it is possible to end up with a unibrow or lady-mustache if you start slapping this stuff on willy-nilly. Latisse is so good at growing hair that it may just sprout up anywhere you put it.

After you apply Latisse with a single-use applicator, be sure to remove any excess solution around the eyes or any body part where it has dripped. Promptly wash your hands to avoid hairy man- knuckles.

Irritation And Redness Of The Eyes/ Eyelids

Irritation and redness are the most common side effects of using Latisse. It is usually self-limited and resolves on its own after your eyes adjust to the medication. Itching and dryness are also common side effects that resolve on their own within a few weeks of use.

Eye Infection

Using Latisse in and of itself does not cause infection, but incorrect application technique does increase the risk.

First of all ladies, please remove all makeup and start with fresh clean skin. This may require you to make it a bedtime routine if you can’t be seen without your M.A.C. Wash all the skin around your eye area so that the solution can be properly absorbed.

You must apply with freshly washed hands and clean equipment. Never reuse a single-use applicator or contaminate the bottle or you will increase your risk of developing conjunctivitis or other eye infections.

If you develop any reactions, an eye infection or have decreased and/or loss of vision, immediately stop using Latisse and call your ophthalmologist to get your condition assessed.

Darkening Of Skin Around The Eyes

Latisse-induced periorbital hyperpigmentation is a big ass obnoxious word for darkening of the skin around the eyes. It doesn’t happen very often, in only about 4% of users, but when it does it typically happens after around 1-2 months of regular use.

People who only experienced darkening of their upper eyelids tend to continue to use Latisse despite the reaction as upper eyelid discoloration is usually only noticeable when the eyes are closed.

Hyperpigmentation is a side effect that is believed to be reversible with discontinued use.

Change In Eye Color

Just as it darkens the hair of the eyelashes and eyebrows, if the eye is exposed to enough of the solution, Latisse may darken your existing eye color. This is extremely rare for those using bimatoprost as a hair growth serum and more common in eye patients using it as a glaucoma medication.

This occurs because the eyes of glaucoma patients come into direct contact with more of the medication with each use causing more melanin pigments to be produced in the iris (part of the eye that displays eye color).

Periorbital Fat Atrophy (Sunken Eyes)

The scariest side effect, and the reason I ultimately decided it wasn’t for me, is the potential for Latisse to cause sunken eyes, or periorbital fat atrophy. People using this drug for cosmetic enhancement should be fully aware that although it is a small risk, it can be significantly disfiguring and IRREVERSIBLE.

The key to this phenomenon lies in the biochemistry between the fat cells around the eyes and the prostaglandins in bimatoprost.

According to an article published by Review of Ophthalmology, “Exposure to the prostaglandin affects their metabolism, causing them to shrink. The shrinkage of the fat cells surrounding the eye causes enophthalmos—the eye becomes more sunken-in. The result is a deepening of the superior eyelid sulcus, while periorbital fat tissue seems to melt away. The cosmetic change—once you know to look for it—is actually quite striking, especially when a patient is using a prostaglandin [on one eye], which ends up causing asymmetry between the eyes.”

A different study published in Clinical Ophthalmology reported several more negative side effects related to periorbital fat atrophy in addition to those mentioned above. In their study, they listed:

  • Hollowing of the area around the eyes
  • Deepening of the crease over the eye
  • Eyelid retraction
  • Sinking in of the eye
  • Blood vessels in the eyelid becoming more visible
  • Dermatochalasis, or excess skin in the upper eyelid causing baggy eyelids
  • Wasting and weakness of the levator muscle of the eye causing upper eyelid drooping, or ptosis
I was surprised to read about those last 2 side effects as it suggests that bimatoprost affects more than just periorbital fat. Dermatochalasis and ptosis are irreversible skin and muscle conditions that usually need surgical correction.

What I find upsetting is that most package inserts list periorbital and eyelid changes but they don’t list it as an adverse effect. Also, where they place that information is inconsistent and not always easy for the consumer to find. You almost never see this potential side effect listed in journal or magazine ads. It screams shadiness and dishonesty.

I told my eye surgeon colleague that he didn’t have to worry about me using Latisse, and I thanked him for the insight.

The irony in all of this is that you seek out this product to enhance your natural beauty, but the reality is that it could actually cause you permanent cosmetic disfigurement when you are just as beautiful without it in the first place!
