if im trying to bulk but also trying to be lean, should i just eat whatever? or have a certain diet

Yeah, those would be useful for fueling your workouts.

It'd also increase your glycogen, which would make your muscles appear fuller.
Whole food diet to minimize bloat, don't 'eat whatever'.

Go into a 300-400 calorie surplus.

Eat protein from natural sources (prioritize meats and eggs rather than just whey protein). Whey isn't bad, but it's a supplement.

Also progressively overload your lifts, and get good sleep.
