Our capacity for cruelty is calculated, creative, and limitless.

2. Built-In Tribalism and the Dehumanization of the "Other"​

Human psychology is fundamentally wired for tribalism. We naturally divide the world into "us" and "them," and history proves that it takes shockingly little effort to convince "us" that "them" deserves to be destroyed.
The baseline human state is not universal empathy; it is parochial altruism—being kind only to those who look, think, and act like us, while harboring deep-seated hostility toward outsiders. When given institutional backing or anonymity, ordinary people consistently participate in ostracization, exploitation, and genocide. If we were strictly evil, we wouldn't have words for compassion, justice, or cruelty, because those concepts wouldn't make sense to us. We’d just be predators acting on instinct, completely blind to our own malice.
Instead, humans are this bizarre, frustrating contradiction: we are the only species capable of building a factory farm, but we are also the only species that will risk its own life to pull a stranded whale back into the ocean.
