License suspended for “running red light”

first of all on the first of June I was pulled for going through a light which I thought was still yellow and I didn’t want to risk contesting it because the chief of police pulled me over so I just paid it. Now today I get a letter in the mail that my license was suspended for a month. Can they fucking do that just not tell me and just suspend it? They didn’t warn me this was a possibility at all.
