Lookism is one of the few biases people openly deny while practicing it every day.
People will say, “Personality matters most,” then instantly treat attractive people with more patience, warmth, forgiveness, opportunities, attention, and validation. An attractive person walks into life already receiving positive reinforcement.
Meanwhile, less attractive people are told to “just improve yourself.”
So they spend years chasing looks through coping methods, essentially wasting a huge amount of time because they know society responds differently to appearance.
The attractive person often experiences social acceptance naturally during the years that matter most: school, friendships, dating, confidence development, networking, and identity formation.
Less attractive people are told they must “earn” basic treatment through constant self-improvement. It becomes a treadmill where people spend years trying to reach a starting point others were born closer to.
By the time they finally feel acceptable, they may feel they have already missed out on a huge portion of life.
