Any places of information or books you'd recommend?

I recommend avoiding everything to do with mechanical engineering like the plague. It’s a shit career that pays less than UK average wage despite extremely long difficult studies. As a hobby it is worthless too as you won’t ever be able to afford to build anything you design due to excessive costs of low volume production unless you randomly happen to have free access to a machine shop.

I guess you can 3D print stuff but it means you’re limited to plastic.

You can work on your own vehicles to learn but honestly it’s just something you do cause you’re poor it’s absolutely NOT enjoyable or interesting and I wish I just had enough money to pay someone else / not be forced to run fuckass 40 year old car.

no I don't care about doing it as a job, I just like the idea of learning mechanical engineering since it seems like alot of things I am also interested in in life can be solved by knowing alot about mechanisms

I have read the complete AMD64 architecture programmer's manual series and that's over 3,000 pages because of autistic interest so I don't think it'll be much of a problem
I have to ask though, if it's such a long and grueling process to become a mechanical engineer, why does it pay so bad? I would've guessed it would be in high demand because not many people would get into it

Mechanical engineering in the UK is undervalued largely due to the structure of the UK economy: low manufacturing investment, oversupply of graduates, strong competition from globalised industries, slow career progression, and a national pay hierarchy that favours finance and services over engineering.

In addition to what GPT correctly identified, I’d also say that mechanical engineering industries are too mature and thus low-margin for mechanical engineers to receive high pay. If you look at the market cap of oil companies, car makers etc it’s quite obvious they are borderline worthless and are “social charities” at this point.

why not pivot to mechatronics Stuff like robotics, automation, mechatronics, EV powertrains, aerospace systems, industrial loT or controls engineering. All have great demand. Also you could always move to Germany which has a more manufacturing based economy

I already work in robotics, there is no money anywhere in the mechanical side of it. Only the coders and electrical guys get money.

Fundamentally an entire generation from about 2007-2015 got memed into creating a massive mechanical engineering oversupply and is now paying the price.

Tbh you are right I've noticed it too compared to software, fintech, Al,
biotech the margins are peanuts while in the fields J mentioned are high growth high value sectors where even mid-level roles capture part of that upside.

Mechanical engineering just doesn't sit in a value chain that produces big profits anymore. outside of a few energy giants propped up by commodity cycles, most traditional engineering heavy companies are stagnant. Their business model is almost always a public utility essential, but not lucrative like tech where companies turn in billions of dollars of profit. It's a good stable job with decent income but not the kind to get massive pays.

It's not that mechanical engineers aren't skilled. it's that the industries they feed no longer generate the kind of surplus needed for top wages.

And even in the industries you mentioned, there are still a massive number of engineers from the legacy industries begging for those roles so the pay is still comparatively peanuts due to competition. Mechanical engineering is also considered a cost centre rather than a profit centre like software so is ruthlessly outsourced and no consideration given to retention or obtaining the best talent. We are interchangeable parts.

Disproportionate amount of UK ethnics on an incel forum, just proves that virtually all whites in this country have decent dating lives regardless of looks level

As a white guy all you need to do is shower once in a while and get a haircut and unironically you'll find a girl, bluepilled advice actually works for white brits
