I’m a computer science college student in the Northeast and recently received a co-op offer for $27/hour with a $700 monthly housing stipend, lasting 7 months. Initially, I was searching for summer internships but ended up with my first offer for a IT co-op opportunity at a defense company in the rural south, a town of 5000 people & nearest city location is 25 minutes with 200k population but just white and black ppl and looks dead. I am asian and I won't fit in the south ik for sure.
The job posting described it as an "IT" position, it specifically required CS majors. During my interview with the manager, they mentioned that after a few months, co ops would be assigned to categories like Security but the actual posting mentioned no coding more of a help desk. This makes me concerned that the role might not involve much coding and may not provide the kind of experience I’m looking for and I might lose out on local summer internship which would help my academic plan, social life and way higher odds of getting laid/dates.
For context, I’m a senior (but have the credit level of a junior) and expect to graduate 3 semester may 2026, this would make it so I would graduate minimum by December 2026 (which many close friends are graduating this May anyways and I will miss graduation and their last semester in college so my social life returning will be bad).
I currently don’t have any prior experience or internships in tech & my resume is decent... I had applied to over 300 internships with tons of online assessments and 7 interviews which did not go further, however I have one more for software eng...3rd round during a week after January 3rd which is the day I have to accept or decline the IT Co op offer.
Pros: warmer winter,Own apartment, first 'tech' job experience for resume, lots of free time maybe work on projects/looksmax bulk like crazy, come back for next fall semester shredded.
read some psych books like 50 laws or win people over... just lots of free time for self improvement I can imagine for 8 months.
Cons: Location in rural farmland, nearest city is not for young ppl or any fun, will be a loner, prospones graduation (now 1.5 yrs late instead of 1 year late),very long commitment, give up on other potential better intern opportunities, far away from friends and family + miss college & summer with some friends that will graduate this spring, might go crazy and regret, zero potential pussy, no tinder dates parties
I have a hard deadline of January 3rd to make a decision. After two months of applying, I'm wondering if I should accept this offer or hold out for other opportunities, as time is running out for summer internships. I have a second-round interview scheduled after January 3rd for a SWE summer internship and am awaiting status updates on a few others. However, none of these are guaranteed & worst case I graduate w/o any experience if I get nothing
I appreciate you reading this and would like serious feedback/advice in terms of self improvement but also the social life stuff
