Russia's focus is on the ethnic Russian areas of Ukraine (south and east) where it is doing considerably better. But ofc it is beneficial for Russia to attack the capital too so that Ukraine suffers heavy losses and is more willing to promise neutrality.

Russia's goal is not to take over all of Ukraine but instead to bomb it into submission so that it promises to remain neutral and not join NATO.

Its not possible to conquer a nation that actually fights back with high morale like Ukraine without leveling entire cities killing millions in the process. The last time the world had actual wars was ww2. Russia conventionaly has the might to occupy Ukraine in 3 days.

For example, compare Poland and France in ww2. Poland fought till death againts Germany and it took the same time for both Poland and France to fall cause of that reason even though France had the largest military in the world in 1939. Difference is, France surrendered without much of a fight while Warsaw was leveled to the ground for the Germans to be able to do anything
