TBH I think it depends on the country. I don’t really see Indians where I live. There are a lot of Surinamese people, however, and they have ancestry from South Asia (they’re called “Hindoestanen”) but they don’t identify as Indian, they identify as Surinamese. Their ancestors were shipped off to Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America. Some of them can speak Hindi, but that’s usually the older generation. They do celebrate things such as Diwali and whatnot, but they kind of get offended when you call them Indian. Suriname is a melting pot, the Moroccans here, for example, don’t consider them to be “real Surinamese people” since they only associate Suriname with black people. Weird take, ngl.

I think it’s because they associate being Indians with directly being from India. Whereas they are from Suriname, so they’ll identify as Surinamese instead of Indian. They’ll use the term “Hindustani” to describe their ethnic background.

Yes, many look Dravidian. Most are not Islamic, but a few exist. I only know one like that, 99% I’ve met aren’t.

Yeah, I think those who migrated to The Netherlands are usually not Islamic. One of my childhood friends was half Surinamese and half Guyanese, but it’s his Surinamese father who is Islamic whereas his Guyanese mother isn’t.
