The troubling thing about statutory rape is that it’s a strict liability crime. An underage girl can look well over 18 and even show you an extremely convincing fake ID, yet if you sleep with her, you are guilty of a serious felony, regardless of your intent. At least other countries have a mistake of age defense, but in America, you just have to somehow know she is of age no matter the circumstances or else you are guilty.
