All people think they're the main character but only a small number of them are, most are simply NPCs, if you aren't a Chad you will be treated like an NPC by all the others.
Sure, you may have some people coming and chatting to you, but that's only because they want something from you, just like in a video game where you go and talk to various minor characters to progress in your quests. After people are done, they just go on and forget about you.
Trying to act like the main character will make many people confused, just like you would see in a game a broken NPC, who for some reason starts to follow you or pester you with questions, when you think you are done with him and just want to move on.
In some situations though you might get lucky and become a side companion for a main character, like when you befriend a Chad, but everything still revolves around him, you're there just to hang out with him and help him in his various quests.
