Shortly before. But it was the Nation of Islam, not Islam proper. It was actually his Hajj that made him reconsider. Seeing Muslims of all colors professing their love for God in the holiest of places caused him to see that separatism wasn't necessary.
He maintained that unity among black people was our key to carving out our place in the nation, but he effectively became fully opposed to the NOI. The optics of their greatest mind "seeing the light" so to speak would have been disastrous for the NOI, so they killed him. Struck down just as he landed on the righteous path.
