Thinking about the fact that he wrote this around the time of the Civil war, changes the meaning to me. Seeing a country split and then battle, would make anyone doubt the future. The outlook of an entire generation was bleak for a while, which fueled the expansion of the west. Anyone with a dream packed up and headed for California.
