Bad people don't change, they just add layers.
How people behave at the beginning of their lives is usually a true reflection of who they are as people, the only difference is that as they get older they learn how to disguise their true nature to fit in amongst civilised society. Given the right circumstances all those layers get peeled back and you see the real them - e.g. adults bullying each other, cheating girlfriends, back-stabbing business partners

The exact same shit applies to victims, only it usually just robs them of every experiencing any happiness no matter what.
I like to use the analogy of pouring a pound of salt into cake mix. No matter how much icing you layer on top the whole thing tastes horrible because it was poisoned while it was being formed. People who got abused as children or bullied, most of them live with that shit forever. It's no different for people who grew up ugly and had a glow-up, the bitterness at how badly they were treated will never go away and the low self-esteem never leaves them.
